Lord Charles Ashfordly, played by Rupert Vansittart. Appeared in 75 episodes, as a series semi-regular, between 1992 - 2010.
Biography[]
Minor aristocrat. A "get off my land" character, but on occasion he also has a heart of gold. When children or others go missing on the moors, he is quick to get all his staff out looking for them; he stands up for fair play and honesty in various controversies over many series; and on a number of occasions he helps the other regular characters (including giving Blaketon useful financial advice when the latter wants to buy the pub). His seat is Ashfordly Hall, an old country house surrounded by a large estate. He complains on occasion about a lack of funds despite being able to employ numerous maids, housekeepers, gamekeepers, gardeners, chauffeurs etc. His first name is Charles and he appears to be a bachelor, though he has at least one son called Rupert, who only appeared in one episode. He also has a sister called Patricia ("Patty") who has appeared four times and a godson called Chaz Enderley (appeared in The Devil Rides Out). In the episode "Many Splendoured Thing", he 'married' a woman who turned out to already have a husband as well as a criminal past. His valuable assets have made him something of a magnet for local crime down the years and incidents involving poachings or burglaries on his estate have become one of the show's more clichéd storylines. One of his most amusing incidents was when he was sold some magic mushrooms and ran around Aidensfield with a shotgun in the episode "Get Back".
